Basic Baked Buns



There is nothing better than waking up on Christmas Day to hot buns, fresh out of the oven. These delicious buns are perfect served with jam or just lightly buttered with a cup of tea or coffee. They’re also ideal to serve with Christmas leftovers.

This is one of Wendyl’s tried and true recipes that was shared several years ago – we had a lot of comments on how delicious they were so thought we’d share it again.

Basic Baked Buns

500g white flour

150g butter

½ tsp salt

¼ cup sugar

1 tbsp dried yeast

2 eggs

250ml milk

Sift the flour then rub in the butter. Stir in the salt and sugar and then add the dried yeast and mix it all up together.

Heat the milk very gently until it is just at blood temperature (test it as you would a baby’s bottle). Beat the eggs and add them to the milk.

Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until you have a moist dough.

Put in a clean bowl which you have rubbed with a little oil or butter and cover with plastic wrap. Place in the fridge and leave overnight.

In the morning take out the dough and knead for about 10 minutes until the dough goes nice and elastic.

Cut the dough into four pieces and roll them out. Melt some butter and brush each piece before folding it in half and rolling again.

Cut into squares or rectangles, whatever shape you like for your buns then place on greased baking trays leaving plenty of room for them to rise and double in size. Brush again with melted butter and put somewhere nice and warm covered with tea towels for an hour or so until they have doubled in size. Set your oven on 220°C to heat up while you open some presents.

When they are ready bake them in your hot oven for 10-12 minutes and serve piping hot.
